Gears to Corsets - Cortland County Steampunk Festival 2019

Gears to Corsets - Cortland County Steampunk Festival was partly inspired by the success of the Cortland Corset Company Mural and restoration project and a collaboration between Cortland independent businesses and organizations including Living Illusion Studio, Magpie Custom Creations, Cinch Art Space, Heroes & Villains, Crown City Cosplayers, Dragonfyre Distillery, Experience Cortland, CNY Living History Center, Culture Council of Cortland County, 1890 House Museum, and the Cortland County Historical Society.

Living Illusion Studio designed the overall logo, poster, and printed materials, and assisted with the website design for the festival, in addition to being involved in the planning and management of the event. I also created projection art, which was distributed throughout the festival, funded by a $ 2,500 CNY Arts Grant for Individual Artists.

The first Gears to Corsets - Cortland County Steampunk Festival took place from September 27th to Sunday, September 29th, offering a family-friendly program filled with entertainment, exhibits, vendors, presenters, games, and much more.​

The extensive history of mechanical innovation in Cortland embodies the spirit of steampunk. We were built by Victorian industrialists, who used new machines and fabrication methods to drive economic development. Companies like Brockway Carriage Company, The Wickwire Brothers, and the Cortland Corset Company created a hotbed of innovation. In Upstate New York, we saw the traditions and fashions of the Victorian Era clash with the introduction of new technologies.
