As a creative advocate, she has worked closely with the Downtown Revitalization Initiative committee on the Crown City Artworks Project proposal which has been approved by the state of New York in spring 2018. She now serves on the committee for that organization. Crystal shares a studio space at the historical Cortland Corset Building at 75 East Court Street in Cortland, New York. There, one can see an example of her public artwork in the form of a 42-foot mural titled “Grace” that celebrates the building’s history and its entrepreneurial creative present. The Cortland Corset Company Mural and Restoration Project was funded through a CNY Arts Decentralized Grant for Individual Artists working in Cortland County for 2018 and through a local crowdfunding effort. This project was intended to engage the community by getting them involved in revitalizing and inspiring the city through the creation of art and exploring historical themes through the lens of the present. The mural was unveiled during the Cortland Corset Building Showcase September 29th, 2018, a free event that included activities from the diverse businesses within the building, musical performance, tastings from visiting vendors, and the Cortland Creative Collection an art exhibition which Crystal coordinated and curated.
Crystal has introduced something new for the winter months at her studio: Sketchin’ Sessions, an open drawing group that invites people to come explore technique or share works in progress to build support and community among the creatives, currently held on the first Monday of every month.
